New Writings: How Stage Playwrights Saved the British Cinema 1930-1956
An overview of the pivotal role playwrights played in British cinema following the arrival of sound and beyond.
- Total running time 90min
In the years following the coming of sound, almost every major British stage playwright had a secondary career as a screenwriter. Using material from the playwrights’ own archives, and clips from films such as Brief Encounter, The Way to the Stars and The Four Feathers, David Cottis, author of How Stage Playwrights Saved the British Cinema 1930-1956 The Well Crafted Screenplay (Bloomsbury), will examine how writers adapted their skills for the medium, bringing the techniques of the well-made play to the screen.
