Wesley Snipes is on electric form as powerful drug lord Nino Brown, who heads a gang that controls Harlem’s crack supply. Van Peebles’ incendiary film, in which he also stars, taps into the hip-hop scene of the time, eliciting a fine performance from rapper Ice-T as one of the NYPD detectives hell-bent on bringing Brown down. There are also cameos by Jamaican ‘singjay’ artist Eek-A-Mouse and Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav.
