A fresh, funny and thought-provoking tale highlighting the indiscreet charms of the Polish bourgeoisie. Born near Chernobyl seven years after the disaster, Zenia works in Poland as masseur to a gated community. His clients claim he has special powers; maybe they’re right... Co-directing and writing with her cinematographer Michal Englert (who provides characteristically striking imagery), Szumowska displays a bold imagination in working variations on the Theorem-like premise of a mysterious stranger visiting a profoundly flawed, fractured community. Her customary themes – the body and illness, loss and grief, faith and doubt, the failings of Polish society, the state of the world – make for surrealism, satire and social commentary. Enigmatic, engrossing and hugely enjoyable.
