Agatha Christie, doyenne of detective fiction, has been frequently adapted for TV, less so for cinema. Lumet’s sumptuous movie – which has Hercule Poirot (Finney) investigating the murder of an American businessman on board the titular train – is notable for its period detail and its extraordinarily starry cast. John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Vanessa Redgrave, Jacqueline Bisset and Anthony Perkins are among the many suspects.
