After a legal glitch, David Smith (Montgomery) finds that he is technically not married to wife Ann (Lombard). What could be a romantic renewal of their vows and a fresh start, instead becomes a game of neurotic hijinks and second-guesses. After a run of noirish thrillers, Hitchcock made this straight-up comedy in 1941 because he wanted to work with the charming Lombard.
