These two Straub-Huillet films engage with the work of iconoclastic composer Arnold Schoenberg. Introduction... combines recitations of Bertolt Brecht’s 1935 indictment of anti-Semitism and a 1923 letter penned by Schoenberg foreseeing, with terrible clarity, the danger soon to be faced by European Jews. The ambitious and awesome Moses and Aaron films his unfinished opera and offers a revisionist view of the Hebrews’ enslavement by the Egyptians and the surpassing of polytheism by monotheism – for Straub-Huillet, by no means an unalloyed instance of human progress.
