The Coens’ third film – a pleasingly labyrinthine, Hammett-inspired saga of rivalry, treachery and murderous loyalty among Chicago gangsters in the 1930s – is not only a virtuoso exercise in style, but an extended exploration of (in the film’s opening words) friendship, character and ethics. Though there is sly humour, the mood is generally melancholy, reflected in the windy woodland sequences, autumnal going on wintry.

The screening on Wednesday 6 September 18:10 will be introduced by film critic Tim Robey.
