Milla traces the conditions of survival of a 17-year-old girl and her boyfriend Leo, as they glean a life on the margins, sleeping in cars and squatting in temporary shelter, as she faces motherhood. Like Loden’s Wanda Goronski, Massadian’s working-class subjects, played by non-professionals, have been ‘given no chance’ by a society that thrives on class inequality. The filmmaker bestows these young vagabonds with a gaze of deep care and reverence.
