Wealthy heiress Joan marries alcoholic reporter Jerry, whose philandering ways result in her proposal of an open marriage, where they have ‘single lives, twin beds, and triple bromides in the morning’. Arzner’s final film at Paramount before going freelance grappled with themes of addiction and non-monogamy. It’s a scathing critique of the constraints of marriage, especially for women.
