Adapted from an Alberto Moravia novel, Godard’s greatest film probes the gulf developing between a writer (Piccoli) and his wife (Bardot) due to their respective responses to the philistine producer (Palance) of a film of Homer’s Odyssey that he’s script-doctoring. Sumptuously shot in Rome and Capri by Raoul Coutard, the film attains a majestic gravity thanks to the melancholy arpeggios of Georges Delerue’s lovely neo-classical score.
