Penned by Lewis Gilbert, the story follows eight lonely hearts who join a marriage bureau in search of a soulmate. David Tomlinson stars as a cynical journo who accidentally finds love, and his breezy comic style carries the film. He’s joined by a raft of young British talent, most notably Susan Shaw and Brenda Bruce as nightclub dancers and Carol Marsh playing a daydreaming waitress. In his debut feature, Terence Fisher deftly moves between the four stories, mixing drama with comedy as Cupid’s arrow unites couples of different classes, nationalities and ages, showing that love knows no bounds.
