In a meticulously recreated Paris of 1906, a filmmaker (Chevalier) teaches his timid assistant the art of seduction, unaware that the lad’s honing his skills on a girl who’s caught his own eye. Both this problematic triangle and the silent-movie milieu make for spry comedy, but Clair also sheds fascinating light on the practised deceits of romantic pursuit and the transient niceties of life.
