A scatty but canny heiress (Stanwyck), whose claims to have discovered a murder are dismissed by the police, enlists a working-class journalist (Fonda) to help prove her case. This delightful screwball-mystery-romance paved the way for The Lady Eve, and while Nic Musuraca’s characteristically noir-ish camerawork boosts the suspense, it’s the performances and Philip G Epstein’s witty repartee that matter most.
