Big screen classics

The Lusty Men

Robert Mitchum and Susan Hayward star in one of the finest Hollywood films about money and traditional gender roles.

The digital version of this film will not be ready in time for our screenings. We will therefore screen from a 35mm print. The screenings on 2 and 3 April are now cancelled. We apologise for any disappointment.

Ray’s most underrated film features a retired rodeo-rider (Mitchum at his greatest) who’s tempted to pack it in and settle down when he falls for the wife of a cattleman he’s training for the risky competition circuit. For Ray, this was about young people struggling to afford a home; for us, it’s one of the finest Hollywood films about money, security and the shortcomings of traditional gender roles.

The screening on Wednesday 25 April will be introduced by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large.
