It’s unsurprising that many movies have been made about Van Gogh – for many the epitome of tormented, creative genius. One of the first and finest of these films, John Houseman’s prestige production remains impressive for the robust performances (especially Douglas’ Vincent and Quinn’s Gauguin), and for Minnelli’s focus on the paintings; their vibrant colours are beautifully matched by Freddie Young and Russell Harlan’s lustrous cinematography.
