Maurice Pialat and the New French Realism

Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert star as unlikely lovers in this powerful drama.

France 1980
Dir Maurice Pialat
With Isabelle Huppert, Gérard Depardieu, Guy Marchand, Humbert Balsan
English subtitles

This was Pialat’s first film to make an impact outside of France – no doubt partly thanks to his casting of two of the hottest stars of the time. The mercurial Huppert plays a bored bourgeois wife who shocks her husband and friends by taking up with a working-class bad boy (Depardieu) who gives her greater sexual satisfaction. The chemistry between the actors is truly palpable.
