Don, a recovering alcoholic, is getting ready for a weekend away with his brother. But all he can think about is the bottle. As he schemes to slip the embrace of his loved ones, his weekend is waylaid by disaster and destruction. A landmark in its portrayal of alcoholism, Billy Wilder’s drama still retains much of its power to unsettle and disturb. Ray Milland’s ugly, yet empathetic, central performance, alongside Miklós Rózsa’s brooding score, helps sustain the tension, which has us hoping for Don’s redemption.
