Inspired by his own experiences as he was about to leave junior school, Davies’ magnificently imaginative trip down memory lane is set in mid-50s Liverpool and offers an impressionistic series of brief, plotless scenes vividly evocative of the joys of being alive – notwithstanding poverty, bullies and religious terror. Music, composition, camera movement, sound and colour collude to take us inside the young protagonist’s mind.
