The Long Darkness offers an understated and poignant account of the romance between two young people as they strive to overcome the traumas of the past. One of the more personal works by distinguished political filmmaker Kumai, this very touching film – shot atmospherically in black-and-white in locations ranging from Tokyo to the inhospitable northern snowscapes – deserves to be more widely known.
