A staid civil servant finds that he is terminally ill in Akira Kurasawa’s touching film.
Dir Akira Kurosawa
With Takashi Shimura, Nobuo Kaneko, Shin’ichi Himori
Kurosawa’s characteristically humanistic film concerns a staid civil servant who suddenly finds he has cancer and only a limited time left to live: how best to respond to the situation? Eliciting a marvellous lead performance from Shimura, Kurosawa also demonstrates his customary skill in making expressive use of composition, place and weather; gently falling snow is deployed to wonderful effect.
