An extraordinary film about an extraordinary man: Dieter Dengler, whose childhood experiences of the Allied bombing of Germany fuelled an insatiable desire to fly, which led him to America, Vietnam and imprisonment and torture in Laos. An irrepressible storyteller, he shows great courage, wit and compassion in revisiting his past for and with Herzog (who himself later revisited parts of Dengler’s story in Rescue Dawn).
