After writing three of Lattuada’s films, Fellini co-directed his feature debut as part of a cooperative. Del Poggio and Masina, the filmmakers’ wives, star in this bittersweet tale about a troupe of weary vaudeville performers and their lives behind the lights, with their extravagances, miseries, small dramas and illusory desires. The circus-like universe and the comic melancholy of the film anticipate much of Fellini’s subsequent work.
