Horror Jazz – African American Music in Postwar British Cinema
A fascinating overview of an incredible genre fusion.
- Total running time 90min
‘Horror jazz’ is a cultural phenomenon wherein aspects of the jazz idiom are associated with the visceral onscreen inducement of character trauma. Dr. David Melbye will explain how jazz in early postwar British crime films, however less than innocent at that point, could find its way into scoring graphic content in later British crime and horror films. Such an aesthetic evolution has much to do with cinematic representations of otherness and their own emergence. Pertinent film clips will be screened and discussed.
