Librarians on screen: Looking beyond the stereotype
A look at the way librarians have been presented on the screen.
- Total running time 80min
Think of a librarian and the chances are that a certain image will take shape: generally female, early middle-age, neat yet frumpy clothes, glasses and hair scraped back into a tight bun. This is an image that the last 100 years of cinema has done little to counteract. Until now. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the BFI Reuben Library opening at BFI Southbank, we welcome Emma Smart (Head Librarian) and Sarah Currant (Senior Librarian) to discuss the greatest librarians (and libraries) ever to grace the screen. They may also offer up some of the more egregious stereotypes too. Come and help us celebrate our milestone, hail the (not so) humble librarian and look forward to the next decade.
