Widely regarded as Visconti’s masterpiece, the filmmaker borrowed from his own aristocratic past for this epochal tale of Don Fabrizio, a noble 19th century Sicilian prince who clings to his sumptuous but fading way of life, despite the scheming of his young nephew. Culminating in a painterly ballroom sequence, this adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s novel is so painstakingly rendered it resembles a window on to a bygone age.
