Haneke’s celebrated interrogation of his generation’s collective trauma is an impressive exercise in disillusionment, captured through his cool yet sympathetic eye. In Arcadia, we encounter a group of teenagers staring down adulthood with a rebellious gaze and an underlying streak of violence, all cloaked in the oppressive weight of their parents’ expectations. It is a powerful warning of the dangers inherent in mindless obedience and foreshadows the later brilliance of The White Ribbon.
Contains themes of abortion, incest, self-harm and suicide.
