Otto Preminger’s film of Vera Caspary’s novel is a pleasingly perverse and subversive variation on the classic murder mystery, with a police detective (Andrews) becoming morbidly mesmerised by a painted portrait of the young woman whose violent death he’s investigating. A compellingly cynical study of high-society manners, fueled by a witheringly witty narration by unashamedly egotistical columnist Waldo Lydecker (Webb).

The screening on Wednesday 8 September will be introduced by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-Large.
