A small Texan town, the early 1950s: besides graduation, a group of friends face the usual adolescent problems of parents, confusing sexual intrigue and the limitations of life in the sticks. Bogdanovich’s lovely adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s boasts terrific performances and a sure sense of period and place; veteran cinematographer Robert Surtees effortlessly evokes – without false sentimentality or glamour – a vanished era. Both Cloris Leachman, who died this year, and Ben Johnson won Best Supporting Actor Oscars®.
