An elderly porter (Jannings) stands proudly by the revolving door of a luxury Berlin hotel. In a ruthlessly fast-paced world, he’s about to suffer a life-changing shock. FW Murnau’s great tragicomedy is pure visual storytelling (there’s only one intertitle), with Karl Freund’s newly ‘unchained’ camera dizzily capturing the porter’s disorientation. The result is witty and heart-rending, with a wonderfully ironic coda.
