An extraordinary film, Lancelot of the Lake is partly about the tensions in the relationships between Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot and Gawain, and partly about the demise of the Middle Ages’ codes of chivalry. The Knights of the Round Table are effectively imprisoned in their armour, and Bresson’s supremely imaginative visual compositions and soundtrack speak volumes about their plight: a jousting tournament is especially unforgettable.
