One of the darkest Ealing comedies, this pitches a motley crew of criminals against a sweet, unsuspecting, elderly landlady whose room their leader (Guinness) is renting for his headquarters; the best laid plans, however, fall foul of internecine’ rivalries. Seen by some as an allegory about the state of postwar Britain (or even Ealing Studios), it’s blessed with priceless performances.

The screening on Wed 18 Dec will be introduced by by Mark Duguid, BFI National Archive Curator.
