Upon release, this neo-noir became an ‘instant classic.’ Based on James Ellroy’s novel, and focusing on the LA police force in the 50s, it’s a note-perfect exploration of power, corruption and Hollywood celebrity, with an excellent ensemble cast. Kim Basinger’s role as the Veronica Lake-type escort in danger is worthy of being singled out.

The screening on Wednesday 31 January features an intro by Dr Martha Shearer, King’s College London.
