In this famously bleak adaptation of Mickey Spillane’s novel, Aldrich stresses the brutish nature of private eye Mike Hammer as he investigates the murder of a desperate woman fleeing from a psychiatric hospital to whom he gave a lift (and, as a result, almost died himself). Vividly grotesque characters and Ernest Laszlo’s noir camerawork anticipate one of the most memorable endings in cinema.
