Superbly acted (not least by the supporting cast of Claire Trevor, Lionel Barrymore and Thomas Gomez), this taut, tense adaptation of a Maxwell Anderson play sees a hoodlum (Robinson) threatened with deportation holed up and taking hostages – including Bogart’s disillusioned ex-army officer – in a run-down Florida hotel. An approaching hurricane plays its dramatic and metaphorical part in the fraught (and morally nuanced) proceedings.
