Kapurush + Mahapurush

Soumitra Chatterjee plays screenwriter Amitabha Roy, who accepts the kindness of a stranger only to find he is the husband of an old flame (Madhabi Mukherjee). Roy attempts to rekindle their relationship, only to be reminded how it ended. But he persists, in this understated drama of simmering emotions.

Ray’s cynicism about spiritual gurus and impostors finds rich material in Rajshekhar Basu’s satirical short story, about an advocate and his daughter who fall under the sway of a self-professed healer who claims to be ageless. Ray’s film has strong contemporary relevance with the escalation of blind religious faith and the proliferation of ‘godmen’ in today’s India.
