Presley plays Vince Everett who, while serving time for manslaughter, is taught to play guitar by a cell mate. His fame as a performer spreads when he takes part in an inmate’s concert that is broadcast on national television. Presley’s best film is well-served by Leiber and Stoller’s fine soundtrack. However, at the time some were shocked that Elvis’ character was more an anti-hero than a stock heroic figure.
The screening of Jailhouse Rock on Monday 20 January 20:30 NFT2 will be introduced by Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive, Film London and British Film Commission.
