Though Herzog disagrees with capital punishment, this richly detailed look at the circumstances surrounding a triple homicide allegedly perpetrated by Texan teen Michael Perry avoids sermonising and sensationalism, preferring to show that concepts like good and evil, right and wrong, innocence and guilt are never that clear. Herzog’s sensitive interview with the condemned man eight days before his scheduled execution exemplifies the profound, unsentimental compassion extended to everyone in the film.
