Meg Ryan sheds her ‘good girl’ persona in Jane Campion’s boldly sensual adaptation of Susanna Moore’s 1995 novel. Caught up in the investigation of a series of grisly murders in her New York City neighbourhood, Frannie (Ryan) falls hard for Malloy (Ruffalo), a homicide detective and homme fatale. Steamy, anxious, and deeply misunderstood, the film stands apart from the lewd camp that characterises the erotic thriller genre.
