USA 2003
Dir Jane Campion
With Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Damici
Certificate 18

After a New York academic (Ryan) embarks on a relationship with a homicide cop (Ruffalo) investigating a local woman’s murder, she begins to wonder whether he might be the killer. Adapting (alongside the author) Susanna Moore’s novel, Campion creates a teasingly ambiguous mystery and an astute psychological study of fear and desire. Atmospheric, and occasionally tending towards poetic abstraction, the film subverts genre expectations.
