A supremely atmospheric and unsettling adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw.
Dir Jack Clayton
With Deborah Kerr, Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin, Megs Jenkins
In this marvelously atmospheric, intelligent adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, Kerr is well cast as the prim Victorian governess increasingly concerned that the siblings in her charge have somehow been contaminated by household servants, now dead. Leaving the question of what’s actually wrong to the viewer, the film deploys Freddie Francis’ haunting camerawork to create both suspense and subtle ambiguities.
