The destroyer HMS Torrin comes under attack from German forces during 1941's Battle of Crete. As its crew abandon ship, flashbacks reveal their lives back home before they left to fight. Coward does his bit for the British war effort, enlisting fellow first-time director Lean to work on the action sequences. With real life military personnel appearing in the supporting cast roles and with the British Ministry of Information ensuring easy sailing, this was an important work of propaganda.

‘It's got a great cast and a real warmness, despite the sadness of it.’
