Working from a minimalist screenplay and making the most of its Lisbon backdrop, this reflective gem is a portrait of a mariner, Paul, who has grown increasingly disillusioned with his life at sea. A lyrical study of loneliness and disconnection, the film profits greatly from Bruno Ganz’s presence. He excels in capturing Paul’s angst, while the Super 8 footage the character sends home to his wife further emphasises the film’s beguiling tone.
