Shot in rural Ireland, this study of psychological breakdown uses a fractured narrative to depict the hallucinatory turmoil of a writer (York) and her relationships with her husband, (would-be?) lovers and a young girl. If the oneiric mood anticipates 3 Women, the more suspenseful scenes echo Repulsion. Stomu Yamashta’s sound sculptures complement John Williams’ score, while Vilmos Zsigmond’s camerawork enhances the atmosphere of uncertainty.
