Capturing a storied milieu of mid-Sixties New York with refreshing authenticity, American Psycho director Mary Harron’s superb debut feature tackles the troubled life of Valerie Solanas, radical feminist, author of the S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, playwright, sex worker and attempted murderer of Andy Warhol. Leading a uniformly outstanding cast, Taylor embodies Solanas’ abrasive mix of intelligence and instability with magnetic force, following her as she arrives in New York and pushes her way into the Factory crowd, only to be icily excommunicated by Warhol. Long trapped in rights-related purgatory, Harron’s film has been unavailable on home video or streaming, and all-but impossible to find for many years. This pristine 16mm print from the BFI collection offers an unmissable opportunity to catch it.
