The first of the Rathbone-Bruce series of films centred on Sherlock Holmes – surely the most famous of all detectives – is an enormously enjoyable adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel in which the brilliant sleuth investigates a mysterious death at the Baskervilles’ reputedly accursed Dartmoor estate. Rich in atmosphere and wry humour, the film boasts a sterling cast that also includes Lionel Atwill and John Carradine.
