The Hound of the Baskervilles
Holmes and Watson, and an atmospheric foray into darkest Dartmoor.
Dir Sidney Lanfield
With Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Richard Greene, Wendy Barrie

The first of the Rathbone-Bruce series of films centred on Sherlock Holmes – surely the most famous of all detectives – is an enormously enjoyable adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel in which the brilliant sleuth investigates a mysterious death at the Baskervilles’ reputedly accursed Dartmoor estate. Rich in atmosphere and wry humour, the film boasts a sterling cast that also includes Lionel Atwill and John Carradine.
