The Hot Take: Masculinity at the Movies
At a time when masculinity feels more toxic than ever, this lively discussion event explores how cinema and television can make and unmake manhood.
The total runtime for this event will now be 150min (rather than previously advertised 90min). This is to enable adequate time for discussion, and to build in breaks.
Total runtime 150min
A vital new event in the BFI calendar, The Hot Take tackles burning issues in film culture. This month, with Clint Eastwood’s archetypal cowboy and Valeska Grisebach’s feuding blokes in Western rubbing up against the queer exuberance of Robin Campillo’s 120 BPM, we examine masculinity in the movies and on the telly.
The evening will include lively presentations from a range of expert speakers, covering a range of topics from fatherhood, fuckboys and Queer Eye. Speakers include Manish Agarwal, João Florêncio, Alice Guilluy, Hannah Hamad, Simran Hans, So Mayer, John Mercer and Caspar Salmon. Each speaker will ask provocative questions - and it’s up to all of us to come up with some answers!
We’ll also have musical interludes from spaghetti-western songstress Sarah Vista and her band of outlaws!
Expect fresh ideas and be prepared to join in with some spirited debate as we explore a topic that is more pressing than ever.
