Tough and tense, Lupino’s gripping chiller, which she also co-scripted, benefits from the terrific performances of its three leads. Based on the real-life story of a murderous hitchhiker, the film is an unusual entry in the film noir genre as it mainly takes place in the desert of the American Southwest, rather than the claustrophobic confines of a big city. Nevertheless, it’s a peerless film from the brilliant and inventive filmmaker.
