Olivia de Havilland won an Oscar® as the naïve young woman whose suitor might simply be a fortune-hunter.
Dir William Wyler
With Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson, Miriam Hopkins
This adaptation (via a play) of Henry James’ Washington Square is one of Wyler’s strongest films; de Havilland won an Oscar® as the shy, naive young woman whose stern father (Richardson) believes her suitor (Clift) is a fortune-hunter. The film won three further Academy Awards for best art direction, best costume design and – for the great Aaron Copland – best original score.
The screening on Wednesday 21 March will be introduced by film critic Pamela Hutchinson.
