Cummins made a big splash as the gun-toting Annie Starr in this lurid, fast-paced gangster drama. Although unloved on its first release, the film went on to achieve considerable cult status, was a major inspiration for the 1967 hit Bonnie and Clyde and has been cited by many later filmmakers as a key influence. The screenplay, although credited to Mackinlay Kantor – author of the original 1940 story – was written by blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo.
