The Green Ray
+ intro by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large
Le Rayon vert
Rohmer’s evocative portrait of a woman undecided about how to holiday – and how to find happiness.
Dir Eric Rohmer
With Marie Rivière, Vincent Gauthier, Carita, Béatrice Romand
Refusing to spend her August holidays in Paris, Delphine (Rivière) samples a range of summer destinations, but whether she’s alone or with friends, none satisfies... Rohmer’s indecisive protagonist suffers confusion, frustration and loneliness, yet still dreams of finding happiness. Completely improvised (though it doesn’t look it), the film is a quiet miracle of realist observation, philosophical reflection and profoundly affecting human compassion.
